Creek Celebrates Safety Week

Author: Shannon McSweeney

From January 19th to the 25th, Mountain Creek will join with resorts nationwide in the National Ski Areas Association’s Safety Awareness Week, encouraging safe skiing and snowboarding by incorporating fun and unique ideas to engage the snow sports community.

As safety is the top priority at Mountain Creek, the resort is incorporating programs designed to get its youngest clientele involved to help to develop safe habits at an early age. The cornerstone of the Ski Patrol’s safety campaign will be the introduction of radar guns.  Patrollers will be stationed at key areas such as slow skiing zones to measure skiers and riders rate of speed, inform guests who are skiing above a safe speed and take appropriate disciplinary action when required.  The Patrol Director will also conduct a safety awareness course and screen the NSAA safety video for all Mountain Creek USSA Ski Racers.

A Kid’s Poster Coloring Contest will be held at both Vernon and South peaks, promoting safety by educating children on the proper etiquette both in a traditional downhill setting as well as in a terrain park.

Additionally, as part of the resort’s Safety Initiative Campaign, all guests who rent equipment or purchase a lift ticket will receive a “Heads Up” card which includes the Skier Responsibility Code for easy reference:

1                    Stay in control

2                    People ahead have the right of way

3                    Stop in a safe place for you and others

4                    When starting downhill or merging, look uphill and yield

5                    Use devices to help prevent runaway equipment

6                    Observe signs and warnings, and keep off closed trails

7                    Know how to use the lifts safely

Because everyone learns something new everyday, Mountain Creek also plans on educating its customers and staff by engaging them in contests to promote their safety knowledge.  Human Resources will provide food vouchers to the first five employees who can correctly recite the Skiers Responsibility Code, the Ski Patrol will provide free beverage coupons for guests who can recite it, and the resorts’ restaurants and cafeterias will award free beverages for correct answers to safety trivia questions.  The daily mountain reports will include safety messages to help educate the public, and there will be a link on the homepage of mountaincreek.com to the National Safety Awareness homepage at http://www.nsaa.org/nsaa/safety/

The resort is also running promotions on all safety equipment during National Safety Week in its retail locations, including 15% off all helmets, and 20% off all wrist guards, padded shorts, spine protection, padded hats and rail guards.  Additionally, the repair shops will offer 40% off binding tests and 25% off edge sharpening and wax service, and rental employees will remind all snowboard renters about proper leash useage.  Even parking attendants will be armed with bright orange safety flags for this weekend.
