Author: Shannon McSweeney

The Special Olympics of New Jersey Alpine Skiing & Snowboarding Competition will be held on the slopes of Mountain Creek January 28th and 29th. More than 600 Special Olympic athletes from the area will compete in and alpine skiing  and snowboarding as part of the Winter Games.

The Winter Games will begin at 9 a.m. for the Grand Slalom trials on Monday. Larry Hoff from the CW-11 Morning News will be on site early Tuesday morning to lead the ceremonial torch parade and showcase these incredible athletes. Tuesday’s competition will begin at 9 a.m. for all ability levels. Races will take place in the School Yard, Sugar trail and Fox Run. Awards will be presented in the Vernon Base area’s Main Plaza stage throughout Games.  This event is a fun and exciting day for both athletes and spectators, with animation including a balloon arch, cowbells and more, so don’t miss out!

Many of these athletes have trained for years to compete in the games.  “It is our honor and privilege to host these Special Olympic athletes,” said Bill Benneyan, Mountain Creek’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing.  “At Mountain Creek we are all about encouraging people to try new adventures and fostering a sense of achievement, much like the relationship Special Olympics has with its athletes.”

The Winter Games is one of four statewide competitions staged by Special Olympics New Jersey throughout the year.  Competition takes place on a local level year-round in 23 sports.  Mountain Creek also serves as the kick off location for the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run each year.
